Shane LaTouche is a Multimedia Specialist and MA Candidate at Ryerson University. As a part of his MA major project, Shane proposed to create a multi-event Dancehall Music Festival. Through Tazz, Shane connected with Catrina and Trevor and was brought on-board to become a part of a dance-heavy project aimed at the Dancehall community within Toronto. After their first meeting, it was a unanimous decision amongst the team to merge the two projects together to create a brand new platform for a better understanding of Dancehall! Aside from being a grad student at Ryerson and a member of The Toronto Dancehall Association, Shane is also the creator of ISLVND Co. (a multimedia company), Twin City Toronto (a Dancehall video-light and photography company) and Humans of Dancehall (a social photography project aiming to humanize Dancehall dancers).

Tazz was born to dance. As the former principal dancer for Blaze Entertainment (Canada’s premiere urban dance company), she was sought after by directors and choreographers alike. Tazz is not only an extraordinary dancer but she also is a talented choreographer and artistic director. She has toured and performed alongside many of the world’s most recognized artists including: Sean Paul, Rihanna, Shaggy, Flo Ryda, 50 Cent, Rolling Stones, Akon, Beenie Man, Jully Black, Fabolous, and Kardinal Offishall to name a few. With Tazz’s unique style, she has provided artistic direction for music videos, film, and live performances, working with artists and actors. Tazz accredits her choreographic style to the dancehall culture from her birthplace, the beautiful island of Jamaica. Tazz’s choreography has put her in high demand in the overseas market, doing workshops in places such as Japan, New York, and Mexico. Her insight on the music and culture lead her to assist with the very talented Jae Blaze on the hit show So You Think You Can Dance Canada for two consecutive seasons. Tazz comes from a community center dancing background (Driftwood Community Center). If it wasn’t for those resources she wouldn’t be where she is now. Giving back to the community and reaching young children is a lifelong goal of hers.

In her daily life, Catrina is an educator to the international community at Ryerson University, George Brown, and the University of Toronto. Though she loves teaching, Catrina fell in love with Dancehall two years ago, and ever since has been an avid music lover, student of dance and traveler. She finds that the soul of dance is in Jamaica and it is there that she discovered her love of dancehall music and dance. As she progressed as a student, she went to Jamaica several times to learn about Dancehall from crews in Kingston, Jamaica. There she was drawn not only to the dance but the culture behind the dance. Her goal is to build a sustainable Jamaican-Canadian relationship in the near future. She looks forward to continuing her journey as a student of dancehall and looks forward to sharing her personal and academic experience to bring awareness to the art and culture.

Trevor Brown is the creative spirit behind the success of various dance groups across the Greater Toronto Area, including Baby Boyz and Madd Skylz. To have witnessed and experienced Trevor Brown’s magical dancehall touch is to see the true spirit of Dancehall in action. Trevor was born and raised in Jamaica and has witnessed the evolution of the eclectic and unique Dancehall tradition. For him, dancing was a way of life in Jamaica, a natural mode of expression. Trevor has long been hailed as one of Toronto’s luminaries, first as a dancer and then as an artistic director for the renowned Toronto crew, Baby Boyz for over a decade. Trevor is a veteran primarily in the Jamaican Dancehall style, a mentor to countless dancers and his extensive knowledge of the Dancehall culture is what sets him apart.

He still dances, but mentoring dancers and providing an opportunity to develop and express a story, (to actually say something through movement, rhythm and sound) is what gives him life.

Dopey is a rare and humbled talent that will continue to push the limits, not just as a DJ but as a recording artist as well.
